THE LOST PIG
âWhatâs a lost pig?â asked Amber.
âItâs a terrible thing,â said Uncle Bert. âTheyâre pigs that are lost to the settlement. I saw one once, it couldnât even speak. I couldnât get near it. Luckily for me it was terrified,â he said, shaking his head. âNo pig can survive like thatâwe all need other pigs, none of us can live alone. They stay alive, but the loneliness drives them crazy.â
âC⦠canât they get well again if they move back into a s⦠settlement?â asked Dew.
âIâve never heard of any doing that. You see, they would have been banished. Thatâs why theyâre out here,â he said.
âThey will probably have done something very bad to be thrown out,â snorted Aunt Sissy.
âCould they be dangerous?â asked Beryl.
âThey can be more dangerous than wolves or bears!â Aunt Sissy cried.
âYes, I think we should be careful, but thereâs no need to panic,â said Uncle Bert, frowning at Aunt Sissy.
âWill my mother be crazy?â Amber asked quietly.
Uncle Bert sighed. Heâd been dreading this. âIâm afraid she probably is. Sheâs been in the Vastness for a long time,â he said gently. âIâm afraid there is very little hope for her. I donât mean sheâs necessarily gone bad or dangerous, although who knows? Lost pigs arenât like us. They lose their ability to communicate or even to recognize that other pigs are the same species. Itâs better that you forget her. You have Aunt Sissy and me, and weâll always be there for you. We love you very much,â he said, and nuzzled her affectionately.
That night while Beryl, Amber, and Dew slept, Uncle Bert and Aunt Sissy kept watch.
